Generalizations: Handle With Care!

Every individual perceives the world in a particular way and each has a personal opinion on the matters of the world. Though we may have grown up in similar environments, may share a general culture or cultural references, may have shared the same means of acquiring knowledge, may have had the same education, we still are bound to think and behave differently. If you look around you, you'll see that often your opinion differs even from that of your own siblings. Yet you had the same parents and the same upbringing. Indeed each and one of us has a distinct personality, understanding and behavior.

Yet we view the world as divided into defined groups. We create this division on some common cultural trends, languages, religions, ideas or geographical positions. The Americans, the Chinese, the Italians, the Christians, the Muslims, the Pacifists, the Opposition - more than groups of individuals, they appear to be solid blocks of something. It goes further - the Western World, the Civilized World, Africa, Europe, the Middle East and so on. We ascribe to these groups a character, a culture, a belief, a behavior, a voice and they seem to act as independent theoretical entities. Such generalization may come handy in some matters and at times may be practical, however once it establishes itself in the human minds, it creates a dangerous mentality.

While we make such generalizations in a day-to-day basis, we begin to overlook the individuals that make these groups replacing in our mind what is a chorus of voices, persons, identities with the one theoretical entity we have summarized this diversity into. Since this entity has no eyes to look into, no hands to shake, no heart that beats, we can easily forget the human element in it. When of such entity we should then wish to selectively present qualities, or examples of individuals seen as representatives, then we have slipped into something that may be truly evil.

In fact offering selected and one-sided information, as well as selectively presenting some individuals as representatives of large groups of people, is nothing more than propaganda and creation of stereotypes. Though there is who argues that propaganda may in fact be positive when put to use for higher purposes, many are the problems that arise from half-true information and crippled knowledge offered to the general public.

Let us not forget how generalization, stereotypes and propaganda were put to use against the Jewish population during World War II and at what consequences. Individuals had no longer names, but they became part of that one entity that was selectively presented to the German people through stereotypes and other forms. In addition that entity became the one to blame for all the social and economic problems and therefore the one to be eliminated. In fact at that time, the friend, the neighbor, the lover etc. became 'the Jews'.

The example I have taken is indeed extreme, though smaller scale events of the same kind we do witness every day.In the Islamic World the myth of the West grows darker by the hour and so happens to the idea of the Islamic countries to the West. Dangerous generalizations that are no better than the one described above!
It is important therefore never to overlook the individual behind the groups and the respect for that one individual whose rights and liberties we so much struggle to respect in our democratic societies, for that one individual prevents us from generalizing and makes the boundary between 'civilized' and 'uncivilized'.
Muslim Academy, is an online institution focused on '"fostering brotherhood through mutual understanding" by 'bridging the cultural divide between the Islamic World and the West through mutual exchange and education".

Who Was Swedenborg?

In the eighteenth century it was still possible to be knowledgeable in many branches of science. Thus an eminent scientist, such as Emanuel Swedenborg, was able to write books in various subjects including theoretical physics, physiology, and psychology. His scientific study was actually done in his spare time.

His day job was as an officer in the Swedish Royal College of Mining which he held for almost thirty years. He had already become highly respected in this profession owing to his published books containing a lot of information and original observations on the production of iron and copper.

He thus progressed from studying inorganic nature to organic nature. He went on to study spiritual nature. He wanted to empirically prove the immortality of the soul. This huge scientific effort was finally interrupted during a period of inner anguish after which he abandoned his scientific work and started interpreting religious scripture. During altered states of consciousness he said he experienced a hidden realm of spirit life. He resigned from his job in mining and devoted his life for the remaining twenty-five years to writing a series of books on scriptural exegesis, theology, spiritual philosophy and personal reports of what he claimed he had seen and heard in what he termed 'the spiritual world'.

He had to get his theological books printed abroad because they were opposed by the clergy of his own country. He had criticised a common Protestant idea of the eighteenth century that religious belief is what really matters: the idea -- still around in some circles today -- that "Go to church and have the right belief, and you will be saved." He was only too aware of many church-going hypocrites not to strongly oppose this doctrine, known as 'justification by faith alone'. Instead, he argued that spiritual development, requires a heartfelt desire to do the good that faith prescribes as well as putting this into useful practice in daily life. Thus in his writings, love is primary and belief is secondary: so, what one wants, what one does as well as what one believes, are all crucially important.

Swedenborg also gave what many of his followers think is a more rational alternative understanding of God as a Trinity. A mainstream Christian formulation of God is that of three persons in one from eternity: further that one of these (the Son) suffered on the cross atoning for the wrong-doing of mankind to appease the wrath of another (the Father). Instead, in summary Swedenborg's position is that God is one perfect divine human of which we each are an imperfect image. And so like us God has three dimensions of will, understanding and action. However, in God's case, there is a compassionate will, a wise understanding and powerful action. Being the source of all loving compassion God wants to hurt no-one and so the suffering of the human race is said to be self-imposed.

Swedenborg described how human beings live an afterlife each with a spirit body that corresponds to the nature of their inner character in their own communities with like-minded people. This state of life is said to mirror so much how things appear on earth that those recently deceased do not easily realise they have physically died.

He wrote about how contrary to appearance there is an inflow of inner things of heaven as well as corrupted things of hell into the natural dimension of life and which of these two influences predominate will depend on how they are received by humanity.

As a person Swedenborg changed during his life-time. He became concerned to tackle his own inclination towards for example self-love and pride. As a mature man he was an affable, sincere and cheerful gentleman: not an egotist. He himself never ascribed any of his ideas to himself although he felt he was a useful channel to provide what many today recognise as a fuller and more sensible understanding of religion, human destiny, and spiritual healing and growth.

In his own life-time there were mixed opinions about the value of his ideas. Some critics were suspicious or opposed, others thought he suffered from misguided enthusiasm and others had an attitude of appreciation and even admiration.

These days most theologians seem to agree Swedenborg was neither mentally ill nor an irrational mystic. However, the reception of his books were hampered in Sweden by an attack by a leading poet and critic Johan Kellgren and in Germany by a scathing essay in 1766 by the philosopher Emmanuel Kant. The most vigorous early followers were in England many of whom formed a separate Christian denomination called the New Church and they in turn inspired congregations in the United States. Although not becoming adherents to his religious doctrines, several great writers such as August Strindberg and William Blake have read his works and have been fascinated by his ideas which have been seen as elevating, improving and constructive. Amongst academics, Ralph Waldo Emerson made Swedenborg world-famous by electing him as one of his Representative Men in 1850.

His writings can be seen to appeal to a wider audience than that of the Christian faith and Charles Bonney a reader of Swedenborg recognised their universal relevance, and so was inspired to establish the ecumenical World parliament of Religions in 1893.

A contemporary scholar of the history of literature. Anders Hallengren, has studied the influence of Swedenborg's ideas on his followers in their activities abolishing slavery in the West Indies and liberating serfs in tsarist Russia.

So why is Swedenborg not well known? He wrote nearly all his voluminous works in Latin. Another reason is that, other than writing his books and publishing them at his own expense, he made no attempt to promote his ideas and unusual experiences but left it to his readers to make what they will from his writings.

5 Top Reasons Why Aseptic Techniques Training Is Important

Hospital employees who are in constant contact with ill patients need to be trained about aseptic techniques. These employees are nurses, doctors, and others who provide continual care to patients. Aseptic techniques are a set of procedures that are followed by doctors and nurses in a healthcare setting in order to prevent spreading of infection. Although not all healthcare employees deal closely with patients, it is always good for all the employees to know these techniques.

Listed below are the top five reasons why aseptic technique training is important.

• These techniques training aims at teaching healthcare workers to create a sterile environment without the presence of harmful microorganisms. Any instrument and equipment that is used on a patient must be sterilized. Cleaning, disinfection, and sanitization are good practices, although on their own they do not keep the pathogens completely away.

• These techniques are beneficial in two ways. They help prevent the spread of infection from an infected patient to doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers; and it also prevents the patient getting infected with a pathogen that can make him worse. These techniques training helps keep the pathogens away, thus prevent both these scenarios.

• These techniques are especially essential during surgeries. Hence it is good for the surgical staff to be trained. These techniques need to be practiced during tube insertions, intra-arterial line insertions, and catheter and drainage tube insertions. Other than surgical care, these techniques must be followed during intravascular procedures, endoscopy, and wound care and so on. Although these techniques must be practiced in all areas of the hospital at all time, these areas are given special mention as they have a greater risk of spreading infection. It is up to the healthcare workers to do their best to put the training into practice so as to keep themselves and the patients safe.

• As in the case of all areas of the hospital, so it is that aseptic techniques must be practiced while dealing with all patients. Here again, however, there are special cases where the chance of acquiring an infection may be more, for e.g. trauma patients, cancer and diabetic patients, and burn patients. As they as already in a vulnerable state, all precautions must be taken to prevent their condition from worsening.

• Practicing aseptic techniques is the best way to keep an area sterile and to prevent spread of infection. The operating rooms come highest in level of asepsis required, nonetheless wards, and other clinical areas also need be free of infections. The high dependency unit and the isolation ward require an aseptic environment as highly dependent and vulnerable patients are placed here for care. They are prone to even the slightest of infection and thus need extra care and precautions.

Be it surgical asepsis (aseptic techniques for surgical procedures) or medical asepsis (aseptic techniques in other areas of the hospital), aseptic techniques are very important to keep the environment sterile and prevent infection. Therefore, training about these techniques is very essential and every hospital employee must undertake it.

How and When to Hire a Power Plant

Temporary power plants are essential energy solutions for power grids or communities that are suffering from down time. They can be set up to help stabilise towns or industries that are having problems with their local grid and provide much needed back up power until a permanent solution has been reached.

When a community or industry's energy demands exceeds the capacities of their current plant, a temporary solution is a good way to ensure energy is efficiently provided while a long term strategy is put in place. It's the perfect, non permanent way to supplement a grid in a large scale and without running up large, unnecessary bills from numerous small solutions trying to do the same thing.

A temporary power plant also offers the ability to implement seasonal peak shaving. This is when a temporary or additional source of power is used during busy or peak seasons to stabilise a supply that might otherwise struggle under demand. It is often a good and growing solution in countries that experience extreme temperatures or in hydro dependent countries that suffer from a lack of rainfall. It is used to supplement renewable energy sources that are not able to provide the energy needed during times of drought or low wind speeds.

In these tough conditions a temporary solution can be used to help to prevent outages, and often for only a few hours a day during peak seasons. What's more, because it is only used during peak times, it doesn't accrue costs throughout the year. Demand is also increasingly on the up due to the number of governments who are attempting to introduce renewable power solutions. These typically dependent on natural resources such as wind or rain and can therefore suffer teething problems best alleviated with some temporary help.

Another application for a temporary power plant is as way to continue to provide an uninterrupted power supply during breakdowns or scheduled maintenance. The ease and speed with which a plant can be set up and switched on can minimise down time and ensure inconvenient blackouts are avoided. They are also often called into service to provide power for large construction sites or projects that need more energy than can be provided by small-scale generators.

When choosing the best temporary power plant to suit your needs, due to the nature of most applications, you're normally going to need a company that is able to respond and provide you with a power plant hire solution rapidly. Flexibility is another major factor to consider when choosing a supplier. You want to be sure that the installed capacity of a rental package can be increased or decreased incrementally and that any required equipment can be rented on a short or long-term basis.

It's also essential that you choose a temporary power plant provider that will offer you an initial assessment of need to service back-up site as this can help you ensure you are able to choose the best solution for your power needs.

A Royal Australian Navy Mystery Lives On!

During the past decade, the ocean has yielded a conclusion to several of Australia's enduring maritime mysteries. The naval wrecks of the HMAS Sydney, HMAS AE2 and the Centaur have been found. HMAS Sydney was sunk in 1941 with the loss of 645 lives. The Australian Hospital ship Centaur was sunk two years later with a further 268 deaths. Studying the wrecks with remote deep-sea submarines has revealed much evidence to solve the mystery. A clearer picture can be painted as to what happened to love ones in the last minutes before the sinking of the vessel.
One of the oldest Royal Australian Navy mysteries still remains unsolved.

The AE1, the Royal Australian Navy's first submarine, was commissioned in the United Kingdom on Saturday 28th February 1914. Along with her sister submarine the AE2, they set off for Australian waters on the 2nd March 1914. After a journey, plagued with mechanical problems, they sailed through Sydney Heads on the 24th May 1914.

Following the outbreak of war on 5th August 1914, Australia was requested by Britain to capture German interests in New Guinea. The Australian Naval Board deemed it important to destroy the German Navy in the Pacific Ocean. The Admiralty suspected that at least five German Naval ships were located near New Guinea.

The Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (ANMEF) a small contingent of approximately 2,000 men, was raised in Australia to attack the German Base at Rabaul in New Guinea. Australia also sent a large proportion of its fledging Navy. On the 11th September 1914 the ANMEF and the main naval force comprising the Navy ships, Australia, Sydney, Encounter, Warrego, Yarra, Parramatta, Berrima and the two submarines AE1 & AE2 were located off of Rabual New Guinea. The German wireless station that was located 7kms inland from Rabual was to be destroyed. Initially, only 100 men from the Naval contingent landed. They succeeded in destroying the wireless station and the next day the ANMEF took complete control of Rabual. The success was not without the cost of 6 Australian lives.

Although history is not always kind to remember the Australian action at Rabual it's interesting to reflect a number of 'firsts' were recorded for World War One.

*First time any Australian or British force fought the Germans on their own Territory.
*The ANMEF secured the 1st surrender of WWI.
*The Naval Men conducted the 1st bayonet charge of WWI.
* The first decorations of WWI were awarded for action at Rabual.

The Navy immediately turned their attention to finding the German Capital Ships of Gneisenau and Scharnhorst. On the 14th September 1914 the Australian submarine AE1 set sail with the Destroyer HMAS Parramatta to reconnoitre. At 3.20 pm the Destroyer lost sight of AE1. Nothing was ever seen of AE1 again, disappearing with her full compliment of 35 souls. No SOS wireless message was ever received, no oil, bodies or wreckage ever sighted. What happened to AE1 has remained a mystery to this day.

There have been several attempts to locate the AE1 wreck in Papua New Guinea waters. One attempt was carried out by the famous French oceanographer Jacques Costeau. However, all attempts have failed to locate the wreck and solve this enduring Royal Australian Navy mystery.

Why is Education Necessary?

Every human being needs oxygen to survive in the world. Education is as important as this because education gives people the knowledge and skills they require. Education is important to people of all ages and it has no limit. Children require education in order for them to learn how to speak and to write. Students in higher education level require knowledge in order to gain valuable information regarding what they are studying about. Managers in companies require education to improve them in decision making and adapting to changing environment. One cannot say that they do not need any further education no matter how smart they are because the quality of education is always improving.

This is the reason why education is becoming increasingly important and it has now become a necessity to everyone. In the past two decades or so, parents did not see education to be important for their child as they believed that their child only needs knowledge on certain issues. If parents still have the same mentality today, their child will find it difficult to make a living in today's world which has become very competitive. Even in lower education level, students are already competing with each other to determine who will get the highest grade in class. If these students are already so competitive in school just imagine how competitive would they be when they move on to higher education and after that, work.

With the standard of education getting higher, an organization's demand for an individual's level of education is also getting higher. Many years ago, a fresh graduate is able to apply for any job they want with a high school certificate. A few years on, expectation grew and the minimum requirement was a diploma certificate. Today, many students with degree level certificate are unemployed unless for those are holding certificates from prestigious universities. Imagine, if degree holders are already missing out on jobs, how those with only high school or diploma certificate fare? The level of standard and expectation of education has grown to a level where one cannot afford have insufficient education. This has how important education has become.

Plantibodies-"plenty Roles"

PLANTIBODIES – “PLENTY ROLES” !!!

INTRODUCTION:

The term "plantibodies" was created to describe the products of plants that have been genetically engineered to express antibodies and antibody fragments in planta, with many applications. Antibodies were first produced in tobacco plants, Smith, 1986. Plants are being used in this technology as antibody factories, using their endomembrane and secretory systems to produce large amounts of clinically viable proteins which can later be purified from the plant issues. The purified antibodies have many possible applications, for example, as diagnostic tools, in immunochromatography or in medical therapy.

The prerequisites for plantibody production are:-

Ã˜ Cloned genes encoding specific antibodies

Ã˜ Effective regulatory signals for gene expression in the target plant

Ø Transformation

Ø Selection procedures for the plants

Plants offer several advantages over other systems for the production of antibodies. They are:-

1) Protein production in plants is cheaper than using fermentation systems. 2) Large-scale production of plants and plant parts such as seeds, is well established 3) Plant storage organs, such as seeds and tubers, can serve as storage systems for the antibodies. 4) Processing of plant material for extraction of food components is widely used. 5) Purification of antibodies is simplified where the plant is a normal human food, since the likelihood of hazardous contaminants is reduced. 6) No contaminated virus or organisms occur in plants that could be transmitted to people. 7) Plants can produce antibodies in large amounts and in stable form through targeting expression to specific compartments in the cell, such as chloroplasts or endoplasmic reticulum.

APPLICATIONS:-

1)TOXIN-SMELLING FOOD WRAP DEVELOPED: The developers of a Canadian-made, bio-chemical plastic wrap which can generate an image or message over any contaminated food product, called Biowrap, and created by Toxin Alert, a Toronto-area company, the plastic wrap uses a protein-based, anti-body detection system to measure the level of toxins in food. This antibody attracts the pathogens that cause 90 percent of all food poisoning -- listeria, E. coli O157:H7, salmonella and campylobacter. The resulting reaction then triggers a vegetable-based dye molded into the wrap in the shape of an X, or any other symbol or word warning.

2) TREATMENT OF DENTAL CARIES: CaroRx™ Planet produced the world's first clinically tested Plantibody, CaroRx™. It binds specifically to Streptococcus mutans, the bacteria that cause tooth decay, and prevents the bacteria from adhering to teeth. CaroRx™ is currently undergoing Phase II U.S. clinical trials under a U.S. FDA-approved Investigational New Drug (IND) application. The first step in the use of CaroRx™ is to professionally clean the teeth with a commonly used oral antiseptic, and is immediately followed by applying CaroRx™ to the teeth several times over a two-week period. No further treatments are required for 6 months to 1 year. In a published clinical trial the Plantibody was compared to the IgG antibody from which it was derived (mouse Guy’s 13 IgG).

 3) IN MAMMALS: JIC’s George Lomonossoff and colleagues in Spain and Italy have succeeded in making a plant produce antibodies which provide piglets with immunity to a transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) when supplied orally. They have engineered Cowpea Mosaic Virus (CPMV) to produce antibody derivatives which can neutralise TGEV. CPMV infects the leaves of the cowpea plant but is non-infectious to animals. On infection with the modified virus, the host plant accumulates high levels of the antibody derivative. Feeding crude plant extract in the piglets’ milk protects them against intestinal TGEV infection. Furthermore, there is also a significant decrease in the amount of virus in the lungs. Similar systems could therefore be used as methods for producing passive immunization against other diseases. The virus that causes Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) is similar to TGEV; the viral vector system could be used to quickly generate large amounts of material to provide immediate protection to healthcare workers.

4)IN PLANTS: Tobacco engineered to express ScFv`s against the Beet necrotic yellow vein virus gave partial protection to the virus. Full length anti- TMV antibodies gave decreased viral necrotic lesions. ScFv`s engineered against artichoke mottled crinkle virus gave decreased infection and delayed symptoms.

FEW MORE..... The availability of genetically modified plant-derived pharmaceuticals is growing. In 2006, there were a number of clinical trials in humans using such materials. For example: • A gastric lipase produced from maize is being evaluated in a phase II trial for the treatment of cystic fibrosis • A drug for the treatment of traveller’s diarrhoea from maize is in phase I • A hepatitis B vaccine from potato is now in phase I Furthermore, in February 2006 the US Food and Drug Administration approved a new vaccine for the treatment of Newcastle disease in poultry from non-nicotine plant cells.

How to Control ADHD Impulsive Aggression in Children

In ADHD impulsive aggression can be a troubling, yet all too common, symptom.  While some children who suffer from ADHD will seem withdrawn and unable to maintain concentration, others will be more impulsive and prone to striking out at those around them.  This can make every day life, particularly participating in social activities, a real ordeal.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, can manifest itself in many different ways.  Symptoms can include everything from lack of concentration, hyperactivity, and distractibility to impulsiveness and lack of inhibition.  Generally, when it comes to ADHD aggression is the most difficult symptom to deal with but it can be managed in the same way other symptoms are treated.

Most of us have the ability to control aggressive behavior, but in some children with ADHD impulsive aggression becomes a problem because the area of their brain that controls such behavior does not function properly.   For these children, there simply is no “off button” for anger and aggression.  What would be mundane annoyances for most of us can set off extreme, even dangerous, fits of temper in ADHD kids.

For many children with ADHD aggression can become a part of every day life.  They may actually enjoy engaging in risky behavior and even look for conflict and they will likely display a greater than usual lack of patience.  If things don’t go their way they can erupt into fits of anger and even lash out physically.  They may also have difficulty controlling their speech, blurting out insults or foul language.

As difficult as it may be to accept as part of ADHD impulsive aggression is definitely a common symptom and children who exhibit this behavior need the same kind of patience and support as any other ADHD child.  Behavioral therapy, dietary changes and the use of homeopathic remedies can all have a positive effect in terms of controlling aggression and impulsive tendencies.

Standard stimulant based medications can actually make ADHD aggression worse, so there is even more reason to avoid them if your child displays these behaviors.  Removing natural stimulants like sugar from the diet and having the child use behavioral management techniques like focused learning and yoga can have a calming effect and enable the child to better control his concentration.

Homeopathic remedies work more effectively than anything else to control the symptoms of ADHD impulsive aggression because they are formulated with proven ingredients like Hyoscyamus, Arsen iod, Tuberculinum.  Rather than just suppressing symptoms, these remedies address the neurological imbalance which causes the disorder, for more thorough and long lasting results.   And they carry none of the serious side effects of standard medications.

ADHD can be a difficult condition to deal with, especially when it manifests in impulsive or aggressive behavior, but it does not have to take over your child’s life.  With the right treatment, even the most disruptive forms of ADHD can be controlled, allowing ADHD children to lead happy, productive lives.  So don’t be scared away by your child’s aggression, find a treatment which works and you can all start feeling happy again.

Ritalin "Kiddie Cocain"

Ritalin, as classified by the D.E.A. (Drug Enforcement Agency) is a Schedule II narcotic "the same classification as cocaine". Doctors prescribe this medication for children. Children, as we are all aware of have currently developing brains. This medication, commonly known as "Kiddie Cocaine" is extremely harmful to developed as well as undeveloped neurological issues. In some schools, as much as 20% of the students are prescribed Ritalin.

There are both short-term and long-term side effects of the harmful medication.

Short-term Effects:

    Cardiac problems
    Insomnia issues
    Nervousness issues
    Possible hallucinations
    Suicidal thoughts
    Aggression issues
    Psychotic behavioral issues

Long-term Effects:

    Dependency
    Possible future drug abuse issues
33% of child anorexia issues are related to the drug as well.
In a Texas State study, it was found that in a 3-month period, 1 in 12 children had a genetic associated increase risk of cancer.

Frequently, insurance companies cover only costs of "traditional" treatments such as p.c.p. (Primary Care Physicians) or medication costs. Many Americans are mesmerized by the "quick fix" solutions offered by doctors by way of medications. That said, Americans are more apt to take a pill for medical issues rather than attempt an alternate method or holistic approach.

Stated by CBSNEWS, dated January 18, 2001:

A powerful prescription has gotten into the wrong hands-children’s hands.
They’re taking this (Ritalin) to get up in the daytime and get their schoolwork done, or just to fit in the crowd, to be cool.
One of the DEA’s most tightly controlled drugs, Ritalin, has the agency worried since it’s easy to get and kids believe it’s safe.
The DEA is set to distribute a pamphlet to school warning about potential Ritalin abuse and recommending tight storage and supervision to stem the problem. One company is developing another safeguard - a skin patch for slow release of the drug.

3 Questions every Concerned Parent MUST Ask about their Child's Attention Disorder

The statistics connecting psychiatric drugs to tragedies such as school and family violence, depression, and even suicide are both alarming and troubling.  Parents cannot afford to place the responsibility of their child's well-being solely in the hands of the doctor. The more questions you ask, the more you will know.

1. What Specific Tests are used to diagnose Attention Disorders?

Simply basing a diagnosis on behavioral symptoms alone can have disastrous consequences because behavior in itself cannot be used to diagnose disease or disorder. Many children are diagnosed as having an attention disorder solely on observation of their behaviors, such as: not paying attention in class, fidgeting, speaking off topic, not performing well in school, etc.  These behaviors are not necessarily signs of a disorder.

For example, if you were sitting in a classroom listening to an instructor speak in a language that you did not know, you would eventually get rather bored. You might display signs that you were not paying close attention. But the fact is that you are not able to understand the information being discussed. Many children who do not have adequate vocabulary skills may exhibit these behaviors, but it is not due to an attention disorder, per se, but rather a lack of vocabulary with which to follow what is being said.  It is like the teacher in the Charlie Brown cartoon saying "Waaah waahh waah..." The child is not paying attention because to them the words being spoken are meaningless and thus they seem uninterested.

2. Are there any Tests to show that attention disorders are in fact caused by a chemical imbalance?

Many psychiatrists and pharmaceutical companies will tell parents that attention disorders are caused by chemical imbalances in the brain, and that therefore the solution to your child's problem is medication.  However there are no studies that actually support this claim and there are actually many scientific studies that show quite the opposite.

In fact the assertion that attention disorders stem from chemical imbalance is an assumption derived from the very real fact that some chemicals (such as LSD) can cause mental imbalance. Therefore the unproven theory is that some chemicals may correct imbalances in brain chemistry. However this extrapolation has yet to be backed up by any actual evidence.

3. What Chemical Tests show that prescribed medication will not cause adverse Side-Effects?

Most people have friends and relatives who are being prescribed medication for attention disorders without any test being performed to show that there would be little risk of harmful side-effects.  When side-effects begin to show (which they inevitably will), the doctor will simply begin prescribing more medications (referred to as "cocktails", yes, like the drinks you buy in a bar) to "counter-balance" the side-effects, with some children and adults ending up having to take 20 or more other medications just to suppress side-effects.

The problem is that each new drug comes with its own risk of side-effects.  The theory being that if one combine enough drugs together then hopefully they will mix to just the right concoction for the individual.  However, although safety research is done on each single drug, no research has been done on the effects of mixing these drugs, and yet the majority of psychiatric evaluations result in the prescription of these 'drug cocktails'. Sadly, the cocktails one can get in their local bar are designed with more precision than the ones doctors are prescribing (at least we know what effect the drinks will have).

Well-known and recorded side-effects of popular attention drugs such as ritalin, adderall, risperdal (classified as stimulants) are:

loss of appetite (may cause serious malnutrition)
    tremors and muscle twitching
    fevers
convulsions and headaches (may be severe)
irregular heartbeat and respirations (may be profound and life threatening)
    anxiety
    restlessness
    paranoia
    hallucinations and delusions
excessive repetition of movements and meaningless tasks
and 'formicaton' (sensation of bugs or worms crawling under the skin)

All of these are the same side-effects experienced by people addicted to drugs such as crystal meth, cocaine, and alcohol.

The effects of mixing these drugs together can have even more severe consequences such as suicide and violent (often deadly) outbursts, as is being evidenced more and more in the news.

Please, realize that your child trusts you with their life and their health. Use common sense and ask yourself whether it makes sense to use medication to improve your child's ability to pay attention. Consider that your child may just need assistance with learning to process information in the context of school and reading.

Drug-Free Solutions are often as simple as supplementing your child's vocabulary, turning the "waaah waaah waaah" from the Charlie Brown example into meaningful instruction from the teacher.

Treatment For ADHD - Looking At the Risks And Deciding What Is A Better Option For Your Child

I have just been reading a fascinating report in the UK Guardian newspaper about the costs of treatment for ADHD in the UK. Under the Freedom of Information Act, their reporters were able to get their hands on the figures for the costs of ADHD drugs and they are shocking.

In the last four years, there has been a 65% increase in spending for ADHD drugs and this has cost the taxpayer over £31 million a year!

The report goes on to deal with some rather disturbing facts coming out of UK schools at the moment. They interviewed one boy who is now thirteen and has been on the Ritalin drug for ADHD since he was six years old. He hates taking the drug and when he skips a dose, he becomes violent and gets into trouble at school. He admitted that he hated taking the drug because of certain side effects. He feels down, drained and listless. He dislikes that drug intensely but it is the only way that he can control his moods and aggression which are just normal ADHD symptoms.

The other shocking fact from this report reveals that there is considerable pressure on parents from teachers and schools to put their children on these amphetamine type drugs such as Ritalin, or Concerta XL which is a slow releasing form.

So, there must be a cheaper, more effective and less costly treatment for ADHD. Let's face it. There are significant side effects from these drugs and nobody seems to know the long term effects on young children's brains. We are talking about amphetamines here! Who wants to be hyped up on a mind altering drug which destroys appetite and disturbs sleep patterns.?

Fortunately many parents have discovered a much safer, more effective alternative to the amphetamines. There are no side effects and no risks to the health of our children in the short or long term either. Homeopathy, much scorned by many doctors, has actually saved the day.

By choosing a homeopathic remedy as the ideal treatment for ADHD, the child will soon be calmer and will behave better. They can also balance moods, impulsivity will be reduced and concentration and focus will be much better.

Time to get started so that your child will not go down the 'speed' and 'ice' route which is the most popular treatment for ADHD. What is stopping you from choosing a much safer and cheaper option?

ADHD Help - Are You Sure You Are Getting The Right Advice To Really Help Your Child?

I was very moved to read about the story of a twenty one year old woman who has been on ADHD medications for quite some time now and cannot get off them. It is clear from her story that she did not get the right sort of ADHD help when she most needed it.

Let me explain a bit better. She started taking Ritalin when she was eighteen because her school life had been chaotic due to her ADHD. The effects were almost immediate in that she was less moody, she was able to focus better and distractability was much less of a problem. She stopped being so impulsive so that shouting out during lessons ceased to be an issue.

After three years on this drug, she has noticed that she feels she may become addicted or totally dependent on it. She has also suffered from an eating disorder in that she stopped eating for a while. She has developed twitching and cannot sleep at night. Her greatest fear is that is she stops taking the drug, she may just go to pieces.

Another story I read about also points up the same problem about how and when to get ADHD help. This parent put her son in Adderall and now, after just two years on this medication, the effects have started to wear off. The old problems of fidgeting, restlessness, impulsive behavior and being difficult and argumentative have all come back. Again this parent needs ADHD help but she is trying another type of medication called Concerta to see if this works.

Did you notice a common thread in these two stories? They both relied on medication alone. The medication can certainly relieve symptoms as we have seen. It produces some nasty side effects, begins to wear off after some time and really does nothing to solve the real problems of ADHD.

How many times have we heard that pills do not teach skills. There is a lot of truth in this because most research now shows that unless behavior modification and coping skills are taught, the ADHD child has little chance of success. The pills will only provide symptom relief and that is all, I am afraid. ADHD behavior therapy is now regarded as the mainstay of treatment and sometimes medication is also used but less and less.

What are the alternatives to medication with powerful stimulants which are based on amphetamine and which are mind altering drugs? We can try herbal remedies, homeopathic and other remedies which have few or no side effects and work just as well, if not better. Why not click through to the site I have prepared to get the ADHD help you need now. This is where you start.

ADHD Children - Parenting Them Does Not Have To Be A Nightmare!

Some parents think that having ADHD children just means getting the prescription for the right medication from their doctor and all will be well. Figures from Canada last year show that there was a 43% increase in ADHD prescriptions for psychostimulants!

However these parents are in for a rude awakening as it will very soon become obvious that ADHD is much more complicated than that. They soon realize that unless there are structures, rules and limits in place, then family life will become mayhem. They have to explain the difference between what is acceptable behavior and what is considered inappropriate behavior. They have to back that up consistently and also introduce rewards and consequences to make it meaningful for the child.

Another problem is how to deal with anger, aggression, hostility and irritability which can result in meltdowns and outbursts. These start to happen with sickening frequency. What can you do? One great way is to encourage the child to verbalize his feelings and emotions before he lashes out and uses violent physical action as the universal remedy for all his problems.

The National Health Service (NHS) in Scotland has decided to offer parents of ADHD children classes in parenting. By attending these classes, they will understand ADHD better and what is happening to an ADHD child as he faces school, social situations and behavior problems in the family. This is following a recommendation by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). It is happening also in other areas of the UK.

ADHD children need not always be considered to be at a serious disadvantage as recent research by Professor Michael Fitzgerald of Trinity College Dublin suggests. He told a meeting of the Royal College of Psychiatry's Faculty of Academic Psychiatry that while ADHD is not a guarantee of genius, 'the focused work-rate that it produces may enable creative genius to flourish'.

So, there you have it. We have seen that the greatest challenge in dealing with ADHD children is managing their behavior but also leaving room for their creative ability and all the other gifts they undoubtedly have. After all, let us remember that ADHD is not a disease, not even a condition. It is just a difference.

Learn how to deal with this successfully and your child will never look back. I have built a website which suggests some ways of putting that into practice. Why not click through and explore it.

Behaviour Management Training For High School Teachers

The role the educator plays in the modern day society cannot be overemphasized. Teaching has always been a social activity but the modern day peculiarities have made teaching a complex social activity and the effective educator as endangered species. The ability of the educator to facilitate effective teaching and learning process in the high school classrooms of today requires sound behavioral management training skill sets which are only presently exhibited by few informed educators. The reason for this is not farfetched. The training schedules which education faculties of universities and colleges used in preparing educators of nowadays for the teaching profession though are very useful in preparing them around content expertise and delivery yet little is done to equip educators for the task of managing the ever challenging behaviors of the present day high school students.

How you can build up your skills in behavior management as a practicing educator: Many practicing educators are lacking behavior management training while the classrooms of today often seem unmanageable. The behavior management techniques that works effectively for building classroom discipline requires skill sets which must be learned and practiced just like any other skill sets. You have to get your goals right- that is, having the determination of wanting to see students behave better, you have to know what action is appropriate to take in any given circumstance-that is, getting to know, and understand the different techniques commonly taught in classroom management workshops on behavior management techniques, then you have to put into practice what you have learned in building classroom discipline and maintaining high school classroom management techniques through personal innovation and consistency.

Benefits of developing behavior management skill sets that works as practicing educators: You would need to keep putting into practice the entire behavior management principles you have learned until you start to do it properly - until you find it natural to apply the principles with little or no hindsight. In no time, you will find that you are less stressed by the day since you will always keep to your blue zone and never go red irrespective of the disruptive behavior a student display. High school students must behave well once educators deliberately get to the basics of equipping themselves for the modern day classrooms.

If you have not been getting the results intended in spite of your efforts at building classroom discipline in your high school classroom, then it means you haven't been doing it well and you shouldn't consider this statement as being harsh! Efforts that are well placed and effective always get the intended results and building classroom discipline in disruptive high school students is not an exemption. You will know when you are applying the principles of behavior management well because you will feel and look good and you will consciously know it when compared to when you weren't doing it well.

How to keep your class behaving well: This is the next phase after you've got your class to behave, listen and learn. You will have to revert to keeping the peace already prevailing in your classroom in order to uphold the standard you've established. Informed educators never stop managing students' behavior since no matter how well behaved students are, they will still require your guidance and support as an efficient and practicing educator worthy of national honor.

Breathing Techniques For Improving Stress And Cognitive Function For ADHD

Suffering from headaches, problem concentrating, anxiety?  If you have adhd or learning disabilities, these feeling would most probably be magnified compared to those who doesn't have the same conditions.  Though there are no guarantee, but changing the way you breathe might spell relief from the constant irritation and improve the quality of your life.

When there is a perceived threat, our heart rate, breathing and blood flow will increase.  A little stress is good but if it persists for long term the results are anxiety, depression, inability to focus, and a host of other problems.  Since our minds are occupied most of the time, breathing is regulated subconsciously by the respiratory control centers.  Our minds can be trained to over-ride the rhythms generated by these centers. By changing the rate you at which you breathe, you send a message to the brain.  I am not being threatened.

People can break the stress cycle by practicing the four easy steps.  First, stop what you are doing.  Second, breathe using your stomach (belly breathing) with a few deep breaths, allowing your stomach to expand with air.  Do away the shallow chest breathing style that most of us do normally.  It is recommended that you inhale through the nose by counting one to four and exhale through the mouth with a reverse count of four to one.

Third, consider the cause of your stress, check your reaction to problem, instead of seething about it go to step four and rectify the problem with a viable solution.  E.g. If you are having difficulty understanding a passage, try to speed read ( at a pace comfortable to you) the whole chapter, you will find that give you a clearer picture.  You can check for words as well as improved on your comprehension the second time around.  For more information on ADHD/ Learning disabilities click here.  Note: The first and second steps are sufficient to relax to a certain stage.  Doing the third and fourth steps will further elevate the symptoms and provide a more lasting solution to your problem.

Infants belly breathes automatically, by the time they are eight or ten they become chest breathers because of the "fight or flight response".  You will have a body that perceives itself to be in stress all the time because you are chest breathing all the time.  Think about the fact that you are over stressing your system over a lifetime. A good breathing technique benefits anyone who is under stress regardless whether they have ADHD/ Learning Disabilities or not.

When you breathe slowly, smoothly, and evenly, your mind cannot generate enough thoughts to support the upset whether it's fear, frustration, anger or anxiety.  If you are not breathing properly, your form is probably going to be off.  So it pays to put in a little effort to get it right and reap the benefits.  Make "Belly Breathing" a norm.  It helps to reduce stress.

Four Powerful Secrets To Building Classroom Discipline

It is not uncommon nowadays to find high school teachers who think that what they need to be effective in doing their job as teachers is mainly learning how to motivate students to learn their subjects. What they invariably forget is that the most difficult aspect of teaching high school students involves building an effective behavior management system starting with building classroom discipline among high school students.

The need for practicing teachers to know that times have changed: There is no doubt that in this day and age high school classrooms have changed due to media influence and, in some cases, lack of parental involvement but many teachers by training soon find out that they are lacking in the adequate knowledge and skill sets needed for managing the behavior of contemporary high school students. It is now imperative that classroom management workshops should be part of a continuing teacher education program and today they can be found near your area.

The need for practicing teachers to avoid falling prey to the discipline game: There are teachers who fall prey to the discipline game and once they are ''tested'' by disruptive students soon lose their temper by going red completely leaving their blue zone where they could rationally think about what they need to do in the circumstance. Many of these present crops of high school students know that if they can upset you with their disruptive behavior then they have beaten you at the discipline game not minding what negative implications that holds for their future.

The need for teachers to avoid the false misconception about teaching: There are teachers who fail to quickly get the techniques needed for effectively dealing with students' behavior and building classroom discipline and after they have found out that they couldn't apply the theories learnt in their university or college education classes soon give up having a false illusion about teaching as a profession. While teacher education programs of the universities and colleges do not train potential teachers on the basic skills they need to engage and manage the present day high school students, continuing education programs offered at classroom management workshops that hold at many locations throughout the length and breadth of this nation provides the needed teacher empowering training in the skill sets of influencing, facilitating and modeling required to douse tension in the modern day classroom and bring effective learning to pass.

There are many things the teacher needs to know about building classroom discipline and managing students' disruptive behavior such that where they even have effective rules and procedures for facilitating effective teaching and learning processes, they will be able to know how to present these rules and gain maximum attention of their students. This is because if students know that they can wriggle out of your rules, they will wiggle and where you know how to take your rules seriously because you have learnt the secrets of building classroom discipline, your students will have no choice than to take your rules seriously and keep them.

Infusing Honesty & Moral Values by Life Assembly of God

Life Assembly of God is the ministry for various Christian academies in the country. One of the most famous academies is the Life Christian Academy. This can be called as an institute or academy where students are taught on the word of God. Students are taught to worship God and are offered counseling by fathers on regular basis that helps the student to attain a deeper spiritual walk to excel opportunities in body, mind and in spirit. The complete education system revolves around preaches given by holy saints and word of God.

In such holy institutes students are taught to follow the path shown by the Christ and to represent Christ. Such schools provide contemporary education along with basic and incredible moral teachings. Thus, every student passes from such institutes become true and honest human-beings. Such people fulfills every responsibilities and duties concerning to life and professional with positive attitude. So, let you child go to such institutes, academies or schools near by your localities. Every success is incomplete without moral values in life.

1 in 10 diagnosed with adhd

In a recent article, Dr. David Jockers of Exodus Health Center in Kennesaw, Ga., and expert in weight loss, customized nutrition and exercise and structural corrective chiropractic care, sheds much needed light on a problem which has puzzled  and continue to pose problems for parents, teachers, school boards, and governments –ADHD.

Known as Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, ADHD is a health situation that continues to challenge our medical prowess. The challenge stems from the fact that ADHD is not sufficiently understood and those affected by it are often mistreated and unsupported (for the most part unintentionally). At the same time, it is believed, that, schools need to establish and enhance requisite education to ensure that teachers and support staff have relevant knowledge, skills, and behaviour to practise safe and effective approaches to dealing with victims of ADHD.

The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention surveyed 73,000 children and found that 1 in 10 children suffer from ADHD, a 22% increase in the last 8 years. The Center found that chief contributors are toxic deficient lifestyles.

Chronic ADHD symptoms show signs of mild to moderate brain damage, where regions of the brain become inflamed and signals primitive regions to move into overdrive. In such a case, the frontal lobe function of the brain, responsible for concentration and emotional stability is inhibited. When the brain is imbalanced, it leads to poor concentration and emotional outbursts.

A recent Lancet study found that many food dyes and the prevalent use of benzoate (a chemical found in many soft drinks, fruit juices, and salad dressings) are a cause of many children becoming hyperactive and distractible. Many food additives and dyes, the study concluded, did as much damage to children's brains as lead in gasoline could do.

Parents and children should show care to the foods they eat every day. Foods that should be avoided include: all pasteurized dairy products and grains that contain gluten such as wheat, barley, rye, oats, kamut, and spelt. Soy products, some nuts, eggs, and heavy proteins are also foods that should be avoided or heavily monitored. Eggplant, tomatoes and potatoes fall on the suspicious list of foods that should be avoided.

What should be eaten if all of these foods should be avoided? Our beloved western diets need to be changed to anti-inflammatory based diets and lifestyle. Anti-inflammatory foods can help to moderate the immune system and lessen its capacity to over-inflame. An avoidance of man-made foods, sugars, and food allergens are critical to recovery. A regular exercise program can also be helpful. In addition, critical nutrients are suggested: "Vitamin D, Folic acid, Pyridoxine (B6), Vitamin B12, Zinc, CoQ10, and trace minerals. Vitamin D levels should be between 60-100 ng/ml. Boost Vitamin D naturally with 20-60 minutes of healthy sunlight every day or 5,000-50,000 IU of emulsified vitamin D3 daily to get the levels where they should be. A raw, whole-food multi-vitamin that supplies ample amounts of folic acid (400 mcg), B6 (4mg), B12(100 mcg), Zinc (15 mg), trace minerals, & CoQ10 (500 mcg) should be consumed daily".

As an educator, I have worked with children in school settings for over thirty-five years and with people in general in a number of societal arenas. I have observed the reactions of people who have lived with the misfortunes of ADD and ADHD and have realized their struggles, the frustrations of teachers and administrators, the incapacity of Special Needs workers, the uncertainty of parents, the inadequate funding of suitable programs on the part of school boards to address the obvious growing needs of ADD/ADHD sufferers. I am first among many to acknowledge the enormity of the problem that confronts us. Yet, when I compare my work with Special Needs students during my 5 years as a Special Education teacher, with many painful situations of the current time, I am appalled at the lack of service that students receive. I also acknowledge that there are several reasons for this, not the least of which is a basic lack of knowledge of the problem.

To support ADD/ADHD students, changes should be well thought out and should not be sweeping in nature. Each change should be small, timely, and measurable. Chief among the supports is learning about the nature of ADD/ADHD. Knowing what is being dealt with is as important as the remedies or treatments that are applied.

Classroom Management Workshops Are Helpful

Classroom management workshops help educators learn the skill sets needed to implement behavior management techniques. Every experienced and effective practicing teacher possesses a variety of skills which includes the capacity for building classroom discipline and being able to connect well with their students. Other skills includes providing and getting students involved in activities that captivate and engages them, endeavoring to understand why disruptive students behave the way they do and helping them to come to terms with the reality of their present lifestyles as well as what the future holds for them while doing so much more with all efforts geared towards student's behavior management and enabling a rewarding learning environment. Every practicing teacher needs to come to terms with the following facts about teaching effectiveness:

Teachers need to invest in continuing education: As educators, we need to invest in our own continuing education. It is nave or rather foolish to assume that students' behavior will improve and that their academic achievements will go up while teachers' skill sets and teaching abilities remain the same. It is obvious that practicing teachers will need new skill sets commonly taught in classroom management workshops and which are capable of helping them effect dramatic change in students' behavior management and also helping students achieve academic excellence in this modern age where our digital-age classrooms do not have instructional manuals for teachers on building classroom discipline. Every certified classroom management workshop equips teachers with skills that can be directed towards achieving specific tasks, easy to apply, and proven in real modern classroom settings.

It is no longer news that teachers generally weren't given lots of training on practical and targeted ways of controlling unmanageable school children neither were they equipped with the requisite tools to bring disruptive students under control though the colleges and universities have never been negligent in loading potential teachers with lots of theoretical knowledge. The result of inadequate training of teachers means you may not have been sufficiently prepared for the challenges of managing unruly youngsters as a teacher. If classroom management can be frustrating even to experienced and veteran educators, then it is terrible for you to make a success of your career in teaching without being equipped with a wide array of practical tools for building classroom discipline.

No matter how disruptive youngsters may be, there are practical tools teachers can use to manage them: The training and tools for managing the unmanageable students have been in existence for a long time though absent from the routine training programs of teachers in the colleges and universities. Youngsters who suffer from conduct disorder are a sizeable part of the society we live in with an estimate of 11-14 percent of the population. There are different levels of conduct disorder, and different ways of managing each situation but an uninformed teacher who nevertheless is concerned about managing the unmanageable students may depend on one approach for managing the different categories of students with conduct disorders and therefore be faced with high failure rate which is capable of leading to extreme frustrations and the decision to quit the profession.

The Power to Make Things Better

One of the mistakes that educators unwittingly build into their practice is the notion that ADD/ADHD students should make every effort to behave and work as other students do. This overlooks the fact that students who are affected by attention deficit and hyperactive disorders simply cannot undertake strict and disciplined behaviours. It is as if they are asked to walk slowly on a treadmill that is going at a fast speed. Think of the danger a situation like that would cause. Yet, a combined physical and chemical conflict plays against the capacity these children have to act and behave at will, in expected and acceptable ways.

ADD/ADHD sufferers do not necessarily expect to be treated in markedly different ways from their counterparts. What they cry out for most, is for understanding, that amid the external manifestations of inappropriate behaviour, there are internal attempts to accept, adjust to, and comply with every expectation. And, if they could, they certainly would set rules and comply with commands and requests, especially from authority figures. The truth is, as hard as they may try, there is a danger of missing the mark or failing the grade. Understanding this dilemma is a first among principles to working successfully with these children.

Consider the classrooms in most schools today. The way that teachers set up their classrooms can help or hinder the teaching and learning experience of all students in general, and ADD/ADHD students in particular. In a general sense, bold steps should be taken to develop learning environments that support ADD/ADHD children. There is no reason that classrooms continue to be rooms filled with desks and too much decorative paraphernalia. Every child does not need his or her own desk. We surely do not believe that excellence cannot be attained unless one is sitting at a desk! If we really think of ways that a greater impact can be made on the way students learn, educators may see the need to step outside the old, accustomed, and predictable ways of doing things (the old comfort zone). Allow the students to move about as they talk, consult, share, debate, question, observe, exchange ideas, and do the many things that learning in and for this technological century demands. Surely, when children need to write, they will use the desks. Why should they be writing at the same time, anyway? We all know that in the real world, everyone does not move lock, stock, and barrel to accomplish tasks.

If the classroom resembles life in reality, ADD/ADHD students may have a better chance to improve their learning. The current hardship to comply with demands that are beyond their capability would be greatly diminished. For teachers, the teaching experience will undoubtedly be enhanced. For students, there will be less time lost from their learning
experiences because of disruptions and other related factors. For parents, life itself will become less stressful. Parent/teacher relationship can be dramatically improved. So, all around, everyone will benefit from a bold move to adopt a different classroom layout that favours the children instead of a continuation of the old way.

It is quite academically unsound to approach children with ADD/ADHD challenges with the aim of simply helping them to "cope". We do not have a similar approach to so-called "normal" children, nor would we take kindly to anyone who would take that approach to our biological children. ADD/ADHD sufferers are children who require approaches that are
suitable to their learning situations, in the same way that gifted students receive programming that is adequate to their needs. It is common knowledge that some of the brightest minds among us battle with the challenges brought about by ADD/ADHD. We do not need to help children to cope; we need to help them, like all other children, to learn. There is really no problem that exists in teaching all of our children. Rather, there is a challenge to teach them
well and for teachers and academic support staff to engage in a paradigm shift away from old paths.

The power to make things better in the hands of the teacher.
Change the way things are done and see the change in the children.

Dedicated Teachers Seek Classroom Management Techniques

Classroom management involves a process of ensuring that lessons run smoothly despite disruptive behaviour by students. It is possible to have enough classroom management techniques by prior planning strategies, lack of which may cause some teachers to leave their profession. It is therefore important to spend ample time in developing techniques suitable to develop a set of tools that will allow your classroom to maintain a conducive learning environment as well as a consistent flow of knowledge.

To achieve this, a number of skills should be implemented. Some of the basic skills are:

First the Lessons should be planned having in mind that unexpected things could happen. A teacher should keep her/his students in mind lest they react negatively to a topic and will therefore have counter active measures in place.

Secondly the teacher should also consider the expectations of the students at the beginning of any activity. It are essential that the teacher involves the students in setting the rules as well as the consequences of breaking the set rules. In this way, he ensures that all the students are aware of all the set rules and regulations as well as the outcome of breaking them.Teachers' face a major challenges in establishing positive climate for conducive learning today. This has been caused by drastic changes in the society, and consequently the school atmosphere. Today, students are more exposed to information compared to the earlier times. Students for instance today are more tech savvy and are therefore not afraid of breaking the set rules. In this, classroom management techniques for high school students that were used a decade ago do not work today.

Factors such as financial status, family background, what they watch on television, and so on influence a child's behaviour. This is why some students turn to violence as a means of opposing their teachers simply because they watched something similar on TV. Many teenagers in particular High school students find it difficult to cope with different aspects related to their age. Society expects them to behave like adults though they are unable to behave like one. Making the young adults understand the difference between what is expected of them and what they ought to do is one of the biggest challenges for both teachers and parents.

School learning environment has evolved over the past few years. Classrooms have become more crowded, racially mixed and some also have physically impaired students. Besides, so many high school students get involved in alcohol, drugs and other related issues. Many classroom management techniques for high school such as expulsion, suspension from school and corporal punishment no longer work. In fact, such techniques are more likely to have a negative impact on high school students. To overcome these problems in a classroom effective classroom management techniques should be implemented.

As an educator, you become a mentor rather than an enforcer. You may be the only authoritative figure in students' life at times since, in many families both parents work on full time basis as well as weekends which is the only time they can spend with their children. This has resulted to many parents leaving the role of parenthood to the teacher. A mentor should therefore steer his students towards good behavior and generate a positive attitude towards school.

Teach, Especially When the Student is Ready

One of the more powerful proverbs I have heard in a while is among Buddhists' quotes: "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear".  First of all, a proverb is a short saying that generally describes a rule of conduct that can or should be followed by all people. However, for the purposes of education, I will look at this rule as it pertains to teaching and learning, as it involves the disposition of students, and the response of teachers.

Every day that students and teachers interact, there is or should be a common understanding of the purposes behind their interaction. Whether that understanding is regularly stated and therefore known by the students, or is merely implied is an interesting question. Based on students' test results we see from time to time, it may be argued, quite effectively, that there may be a need for a clearer delineation of the critical elements of student/teacher relationships during the processes of teaching and learning.

Unlike other professions, the teaching profession is central to life itself. It is fundamental to the growth and maintenance of every society. Any society whose children are poorly educated, will see a decline in the ways of life of its people. A strong and vibrant society must have a strong, vibrant, and clear path to the best available education for its children. Such a society does not strive to attract teachers who are good enough, but rather teachers who are the best .

Teachers who are the best at what they do share a number of common attributes. They are committed, kind, caring, engaging, knowledgeable, and approachable. They believe in and love the children they teach, taking care to ensure that individual as well as the collective needs are met, maintain consistency in their professional conduct, constantly pursuing personal and professional learning, and thoroughly plan the lessons they teach, clearly noting the differences in the learning capacities of students . These attributes are a few of many that the best teachers share.

Like an architect, best teachers plan their work and develop a graphic design ahead of presenting it to their students. When they meet with their students, after greeting, welcoming, and putting them at ease, go on to share the purposes of the teaching and learning experience. When a student becomes an active participant in the purposes of the learning experience, the student is more ready to engage in the learning. At that point, the point at which the student understands what, how, and why the learning, that's when the teacher can begin the process of teaching in earnest -- when the student is ready, the teacher will appear.

To teach when the student is not ready is to engage in an exercise that will not produce laudable results. For student success, student readiness is key and requires that students be informed of the purpose of their learning; why they need to know it, what it involves, how it will be presented, how it would be evaluated and shared, and what it will do to their wellbeing. It is critical that this process takes place every time that students and teachers interact with each other. If it seems arduous, that's because it is and that's because it is teaching. The teaching profession is unlike other professions. It requires people who are unlike other people.  The job of teachers is not replicated in any other profession.

When a doctor interacts with patients, it is usually one at a time. When a banker interacts with clients, often it is one on one. When a lawyer deals with clients, that too is usually one on one, but when a teacher interacts with students, it's usually 25 at a time and can be as many as 35. Best teachers are rare human beings. Best teachers ensure that so-called "normal" students know what they are going to learn, how, and why and that students with attention deficit disorders must also know too. They cannot be treated as after-thoughts or no thoughts at all. It must be remembered that they too can learn, albeit in a different way from other students.

Today's best teachers are "guides on the side" and not "sages on stages". The notion of the front of the class is as old as a thing forgotten or should be. As students engage in their learning, especially when they are ready, best teachers are there, standing outside of their projected world, guiding and showing them ways to proceed. Is this a new way? Perhaps, to some it is, but it is a winning way and a way, when applied, will make a world of positive difference for every child, no matter the learning style. So, teach, especially when the student is ready.

Breaking the Myths Surrounding Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

The disease Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) may be familiar to most people, but only a few are knowledgeable about its causes. Nevertheless, it is also essential to at least try to understand the medical explanations behind irregular behaviors so that proper cure and prevention can be administered. Unfortunately, most people's notions about ADHD are entangled with various myths and misconceptions that consequently produce a stigma against patients with this psychological deficit.

For that reason, children struggling from this attention and hyperactivity problem have been tagged as troublemakers and spoiled brats, while adult patients are deemed sluggish and not smart. Most people assume that ADHD is not even a medically accepted disorder or that it does not exist at all. So instead of having a concrete support system from their respective communities, individuals with ADHD tend to be detached or isolated.

That scenario is not helpful at all since feeling ostracized and misjudged can worsen their condition. Hence, the best way to deal with the issue is to first fix some of the incorrect perceptions that people have against this behavioral disorder. For example, some believe that ADHD is just a way for drug companies and psychologists to make more money.

However, the truth is that Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) exists and has been upsetting thousands of children worldwide. If not sorted out immediately, this can be a lifelong burden that individuals and their families have to withstand. Thankfully, there are several residential treatment centers today that can help treat not only the ADHD per se, but also the emotional wounds that other members of society have induced on the patients themselves.

Apart from offering shelter, these establishments also have a fully equipped residential treatment facility that can give the treatment needs of teens with ADHD. This demystifies yet another belief which claims that children who have ADHD are over-diagnosed and over-medicated. Some people think that the illness has become an excuse for all misbehaving youths; however, professional psychologists can confirm that they have valid methods of diagnosing and treating ADHD.

Another myth is that the indications of ADHD including lack of motivation, alcoholism, lazy learning habits, and sensitivity to food are all deliberate and controllable. This mistaken belief usually leads to harsh parenting. To stop this from occurring, parents should seek professional help from youth treatment centers that can provide all the essential medical and emotional help their children need.
